Varicose Veins

Varicose vein is a common ailment stemming from weakened or impaired vein walls and valves. In this state, veins become swollen and contorted, typically residing just beneath the skin, predominantly manifesting in the lower extremities.

When a vein becomes dilated, elongated, and tortuous, it is said to be varicose. Varicose vein is a common health condition nowadays, commonly seen in professions that involve prolonged periods of standing or sitting, such as security guards, teachers, drivers, and police officers. According to Ayurveda, varicose veins are referred to as Siraja granthi and can be caused by a variety of factors, including prolonged standing or sitting, weight gain, multiple pregnancies, advanced age, genetic predisposition, engaging in heavy weight lifting, and conditions like hypertension and obesity. Physical activity or trauma can also contribute to their development.

Patients with varicose veins often experience symptoms such as a dull pain, a heavy or weighty feeling in the legs, throbbing (pulsation) in the lower leg, a burning sensation, muscle cramping, swelling in the lower legs, and increased pain after prolonged sitting or standing. Itching and a blackish or bluish discoloration of the skin are also common.

According to Ayurveda, Siraja granthi originates in individuals who are physically weakened yet engage in excessive physical activities. This condition leads to the aggravation of Vata, which invades the network of veins, causing the further aggravation of Pitta and Kapha doshas. This imbalance among the Tridoshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) affects the vein walls, resulting in roughness and the characteristic symptoms of varicose veins, such as elevated, quickly developing veins.
